Caprica

capricaAfter an extraordinarily disappointing series finale, Ronald Moore, creator of Battlestar Galactica has set in motion another nefarious plan to let down legions of science fiction nerds. The events in the spin-off series, Caprica precede the destruction of the colonies by 58 years. Once again, we get to see Moore’s ideas on racism, religious fanaticism, relationships and technology.

If you haven’t already guessed, my respect for the man has gone down a couple of notches after finding out that the big reveal he had in store for fans of Battlestar Galactica was, “God did it”. Never mind the unresolved story threads, what about the asteroid sized holes in logic? How could a science fiction show be so scientifically and logically challenged?

Now that’s out of the way, the feature length pilot for Caprica was pretty solid. It answers a few questions that were never tackled in the original series; the most important being  how the Cylons, a breed of intelligent machines, developed a belief system rooted in Judeo-Christian traditions. BSG itself stretched the limits of portrayal of sex and violence on television. Caprica takes it further. To make up for the lack of cool explosions in space, there’s plenty of rather smart expositions on the nature of being and consciousness.

I’m fairly certain Ronald Moore will eventually let us down again but rest assured, he’ll disappoint us in style.

  1. just this morning, d and i were talking about how your eyes go all wide when you talk about this thing.

    “it’s only a tv show pee.” :)

the gang at paul’s miss you. i don’t. they do. :)

  2. In all honesty, I’m not gonna bother watching this. Also, I’m gonna imagine that BSG got canceled mid-season.

Meanwhile, Lost and Sarah Connor Chronicles keeps getting better and better. Lost is now easily one of the best experiences in entertainment I’ve ever consumed. Er.. Top 10 best ever on TV.

I’m still not 100% on Dollhouse, but I am sticking to it. Fringe is decent. Castle is hilarious.

Chuck has surprisingly entered my list of “well written shows”. Consistently inventive plot, very engaging characters. Hot Babes! (Yvonne Strahvoski, and the occassional Jordana Brewster & Tricia Helfer).

  3. I’m commenting because its BSG. ;-) I’m on season 3 right now (they’ve been rescued off New Caprica). I think things have gotten fracked up since then. I hate what’s happened to Starbuck. I’ve watched Caprica and was quite impressed. I find the Judeo-Christian theme pretty interesting. Its amusing to watch the Cylons twist various facets of the religion into shapes that suit their convenience. Hardly Christian, I’ll tell ya ;-)

  4. @pink imp Oh wait for the finale of S3. That was the best episode of the series (imo) and Mr Moore goes and truly fraks it up with the series finale.

Caprica was good but in hindsight, it was all a bit too much like The OC what with all the cool teens and all.

The Cylons never twisted much; they just inherited the programming from Eve. I think.

  5. Yeah the teen stuff was definitely off key. I wasn’t sure if the DVD I ordered was actually Caprica when I was watching that crazy club scene. Virgin sacrifice, w.e.i.r.d! Also, since Geminon is another planet how come they had to get on a *train* to get there?!
The New Caprica settlement was a bummer. The imagery reminded me of Auschwitz and the Gestapo. ugh.
Yeah, my advisor was complaining about the finale too..we were all ears the day after but he was like all meh about it.
Personally, I love “33″, “Water” and most of seasons 1 and 2.0

  6. @pink imp Interesting. The train thing never bothered me. Maybe they were hitching a ride to the nearest space station (?) to get the first ship out of Caprica. I’m just saying.

The imagery from New Caprica was supposed to remind you of Auschwitz and the Third Reich.

33 was my favorite too till I watched the closing shot of the season 3 finale. And then it all went to effing hell.

  7. I got the Caprica episode almost a month back. Everytime I think of starting it, I get flashes of the final outrageously sucky episode.
    I think I lost interest.

  8. @sooraj Caprica is way way way better than the BSG finale. :)

  9. Yeah, about the train: They said there were on the train “to” Geminon; some blooper by Moore! oops! Now since I gather that the closing shot of season 3 is out of whack, I am guessing one of the BSG crew is a cylon! I still haven’t watched my DVD. Some how the New Caprica crap just spoiled things terribly!
I’ve watched two Firefly episodes and I think the story lines are soo goofy! I mean what does a geek have to do to get some decent sci fi around here ! GEE!

  10. Urge to give out spoilers. Must. Resist.

Oi. Firefly was a great show. Period.

Honestly, me too thinks there hasn’t been a really great sci fi show ever…everything borders on fantasy and shit. BSG got close though.

  11. There’s only two things left for me to do: watch Babylon 5 and watch and re-watch Startrek. Whatever happens I will not watch Stargate. Stargate’s the frozen pizza of sci fi. The movie was very disappointing. Stupid desert planet. Best sci fi? Star trek and Star wars. If you have survived Order 66 that is…

  12. Um yeah, no I hid in a cave on Tatooine.

Good sci fi (on TV) doesn’t exist. Okay, maybe a few episodes of Start Trek TNG. But other than that, it’s just the Clone Wars series I dig.
